Bethesda 24 - Mold 12

Contrary to many expectations, it was Bethesda that took the honours against Mold - a team which has enjoyed a good run in the league of late.

First on the scoreboard was the home side after 7 minutes play. An attempted clearance kick was charged down by Bethesda flanker, Osian Jones. The ball fell into Bethesda’s outside half, Mathew Parry’s grateful arms with no one between him and the tryline. The try was not converted.

As the half wore on the visitors came more and more into the match through their big forwards and powerful centres. Bethesda’s defenders were forced into a sustained period of tackling as Mold employed the rolling maul and carries close to the rucks.

These tactics bore fruit with the last move of the half when fullback Martin cut through the home defence to score a try between the posts. The conversion was an easy one for outside half Cai Edwards giving the visitors a 7 points to 5 lead at the interval.

Bethesda’s forwards enjoyed a good period early in the second half putting pressure on Mold’s tryline. The ball was swept left and centre Huw Williams scored in the corner. The conversion was missed but Bethesda were 3 points ahead.

Mold persisted with their forward effort and, at the start of the final quarter, Bethesda’s backs made a mess of a clearance attempt. The pressure on the home line was too great and Alan Ellis scored an uncoverted try putting his side 2 points ahead.

With the close results between these sides recently in mind, no one expected what was to happen next.

As Mold attacked in Bethesda’s half, Parry charged down a kick - he gathered the ball and outpaced the defence to score between the posts. Fullback Gethin Long kicked the conversion making the score 17 points to 12.

Better was to come from the home side as the backs ran out of their own half. Long made a good break running alongside wing Iestyn Stokes. He cut inside towards the posts scoring a memorable individual try. The fullback converted his own try to seal a victory which was worth 5 league points to Bethesda.
