Bro Ffestiniog 12 - Bethesda 19

Bethesda went through to the Conwy Land Rover NW Cup semi-final gaining revenge for the recent 1 point defeat against Bro.

The home side were guilty of giving away a number of penalties and Bethesda had 4 opportunities to kick at the posts in the first half. Fullback Gethin Long succeeded twice and the visitors were 6 points ahead with the first half drawing to a close.

Bethesda’s players made a hash of clearing near their own posts and Bro were awarded a 5 metre scrum. The home No 8 slid through for a try without a hand being laid upon him making the score 5 points to 6 at the interval.

Bethesda continued to press in the second half with their outside half, Mathew Parry having his best match for some time and with Long causing problems for the Bro defence. Long kicked another penalty goal after 10 minutes and, 5 minutes later, the visitors scored a good try. Wing Alwyn Roberts outflanked his opponent before cutting inside towards the posts. No 8 Arwyn Griffith was on hand to take the pass to score the try which was converted by Long.

Long landed another penalty goal some minutes later giving Bethesda a 19 points to 5 lead.

This score galvanised the home side and they pressurised the Bethesda line before scoring a converted try after 22 minutes and bringing Bro within a converted try of Bethesda’s total.

This time, however, yielding a late score was not going to happen and Bethesda went deservedly through to the next round.
